Tasting Notes
Some clichés are clichés for a good reason. So yes, if you think of an apple strudel you think of Vienna, that dough filled with sweet-tart apple pieces, fine breadcrumbs, rum-soaked raisins, ground cinnamon, lemon juice and icing sugar. It was served with whipped cream and a Wiener melange – an espresso with steamed milk, topped off with milk froth. Diluted, we took the Orient Express from Vienna to Athens, enjoying Kalamata olives followed by a Greek meze platter with plenty of pitta bread, feta and tzatziki. All this was washed down with a mastiha liqueur, made using the resin from the mastic tree on the island of Chios.
"On a sunny afternoon, with the iconic Stephansdom in Vienna as my backdrop, I went on a tasting journey with “Fortification from Vienna to Athens”.
The nose right away highlighted the city Vienna, as a delightful note of Apfelstrudel appeared. Next, an unexpected yet inviting note of rich coffee emerged, suitable for Vienna’s vibrant coffeehouse culture. Last but not least, a hint of cucumber added a unique twist, a subtle nod to Athen’s sun-soaked gardens.
On the palate, the Apfelstrudel note took center stage, accompanied by a medley of orchard fruits. After that, the coffee profile stepped forward, with it came a velvety smoothness. The whisky creates a dream-like fusion of Vienna and Athens. It left a gentle sweetness on the palate, bringing up memories shared with friends in these stories’ cities". - Stefan Schmidt
