The founder of Nikka, Masataka Taketsuru, chose this location for the company's second distillery because of its natural beauty and pure water. It lies between the city of Sendai and the mountains and is skirted by the Nikkawa River. The distillery invites local school children to release salmon into the river every May. Both grain and malt whisky are made on the site.
