AWARDS SUCCESS FOR SMWS

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is celebrating another bumper batch of award medals in the UK and internationally.

In the competitive Scotch Whisky Masters competition, the SMWS scooped a best-ever result of five Master medals and one Gold from our six entries. The competition is based on a blind tasting chaired by the Spirits Business and led by a panel of leading spirits specialists, with excellence recognised by category, age and pricing.

“This year’s competition saw 131 entries from more than 30 companies, making the award of any medal something that everyone who entered should be extremely pleased with,” said Richard Cochrane from the Spirits Business. “However, for The Scotch Malt Whisky Society to receive five Master medals – the highest medal we award – plus one Gold medal within a very competitive Masters competition is a truly phenomenal achievement. Massive congratulations!”

Meanwhile the Society won three Double Gold and three Gold medals in the San Francisco World Spirits Championship (SFWSC), the oldest spirits competition in North America. One of the Society’s outstanding winners was our small batch blended malt Tabanco Time, which was awarded a Double Gold medal.

“We’ve had a great year of awards already and to get our best-ever result in the Scotch Whisky Masters and superb results in the SFWC to add to our haul is fantastic,” said SMWS spirits director Kai Ivalo. “We and our members prize the experience of exploring flavour above anything else, and the variety of bottlings recognised here with the highest-level Master award is testimony to the quality we offer – and to the expertise of the Tasting Panel in making sure that what we bottle for members is always a cracking whisky.

“Our members know that already – but to be recognised by our industry peers is always rewarding. The fact that we’re approaching 250 awards across various competitions since 2018 also demonstrates how consistent we have been in offering amazing limited-edition whisky to our members.”
