Tasting Notes

Distilleries 1, 9, 8 and 3, of course, spell out the year that the Society was founded. In this collection we hark back to the Society’s first bottling, with Cask No. 1.282: Magic shadow show from the Speyside distillery where it all began for us in 1983. Cask No. 9.274: Toffee apple orchard is a 19-year-old classic Sweet, Fruity & Mellow flavour profile bottling. Cask No. 8.43: Shaded by flowers is from one of our less commonly seen distilleries, renowned for its use of sherry cask maturation and Cask No. 3.348: Mellifluous quince is a Society favourite from an Islay distillery treasured for its perfumed smoke.

40TH ANNIVERSARY BOTTLINGS

In 2023, we celebrate 40 years of our Society. In 1983, a man called Pip brought people together over whisky with unadulterated flavour. In hindsight, he said: “The people who said it couldn’t be done were so dull.”

Today, each of our 150+ distillery partners has a number, playing a part in a flavour story. This collection is dedicated to a coming-together of unique tastes and people – carrying the reference from distilleries 1, 9, 8 and 3, in celebrating of our birth year. We still believe: all that matters is flavour.

Created by the team at design agency Frank, the numbers on the bottle pay tribute to the founding year of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society in 1983 and the distillery coding system that is unique to the SMWS.

EUAN CAMPBELL, SMWS HEAD OF WHISKY CREATION

“We’re very excited about this set that’s coming out and it’s visually stunning as well, with an excellent label design,” says SMWS head of whisky creation, Euan Campbell. “The four distillery numbers pay tribute to the founding year of ours in 1983. And there are some pretty quirky, interesting things about these bottlings as well. One that really jumps out at me is Cask No. 8.43: Shaded by flowers. This is seven years old and it’s from a full-term maturation in first fill Pedro Ximénez sherry. It’s also the first bottling we’ve seen from this distillery since 2006 – so it’s a welcome return for distillery number 8. This is also from our cask filling programme, and I remember the day back in November 2015 when we actually commissioned this cask to be filled. So that was a really nice thing to see that coming through from our fillings programme.”
