We took a fresh fruit kebab of pineapple, melon, mango chunks, strawberry pieces and red grapes and lay it onto a bed of barley being dried on the malting floor with a peat fire in full blast – you get the picture? We should not have taken a deep breath as the mouth was filled with peat smoke which we washed down with a heavily smoked barley wine. After the addition of water very medicinal, deep heat muscle rub and embrocation liniment came to mind as others felt transported back into the late Middle Ages and being seen by a plague doctor with his beak mask, the inside stuffed with spices and rose petals.
