We air-cured Burley tobacco by hanging the leaves in a well-ventilated barn, then we ground coffee beans and harvested lemons before we took a break and enjoyed fresh rye bread with salted butter, cinnamon bagels, apricots, peaches and pears as well as melted butter on hot cross buns and pain au chocolate. After the addition of water, we found ourselves walking amongst pine trees and camellias, crossing a mountain spring, possibly on a curved bridge – might we just be in a Japanese garden? Soft and thick on the palate, scones and jam with clotted cream followed by a French poached pear tart – a special treat.
