Our first impressions were of a youthful and vigorous dessert wine with elegant oak spiced laced throughout. Further impressions were of custard pudding infused with old Tokaji, bananas baked in salted carmel, candied hazelnuts, citrus peels, runny honey and heather flowers. Gorgeous stuff! With water we found tinned peaches, rosewater, date syrup, red fruit teas and marzipan. The mouth initially displayed a big, alluring spiciness and the impression of old demerara rum. Then exotic fruit teas, caramelised brown sugar on a flambeed banana, creme brûlée, toasted coconut and aged calvados. Water focused those rum qualities, and brought out many dark and yellow fruits. Plum wine, aniseed, old copper coins and a kiss of sandalwood and earthy turmeric. Matured for 28 years in a bourbon hogshead before transfer to a 2nd fill wine barrique which was previously used to mature SMWS bottling 72.49.
