A big, bold, no nonsense highland style malt; this much was immediately apparent from the nose. Notes of hobnobs and digestive biscuits, then caramelised oatmeal, scones loaded with clotted cream, honeysuckle, melon and allspice. Water softened things slightly and brought intricate notes such as elderflower, sour apples, fruit roll ups, red laces and rich custard. The neat palate opened with creamy chai tea, cinnamon buns, golden syrup, custard creams, baked banana, ginger in syrup and a wonderfully waxy mouthfeel. With reduction we felt it became perfectly balanced with a creamy texture and notes of tinned peaches, pears poached in calvados, honey on buttered brown toast, subtle menthol notes and a refreshing tang of bitter lemon pith in the aftertaste.
