Batch 42: Highland peaty potion is the first smoky, peated Highland single malt Scotch whisky to grace our clear glass ‘Heresy’ releases. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because it’s not been so very long since we released Batch 32: Fife peaty potion. If you enjoyed that release, you may already have an idea of where we’re headed with Batch 42…
To bring this 10-year-old small-batch single malt to life, we matured peated and unpeated whiskies from the same Highland distillery separately in first-fill bourbon barrels for seven years, providing texture, creaminess and marzipan. After that, we blended those whiskies and filled our new potion into a combination of fresh oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry butts, bringing layered dried fruits and molasses into the mix. Tasting Notes
We created this flavour packed small batch single malt by combining peated and unpeated whiskies from the same Highland distillery. They had matured for seven years in first fill bourbon barrels before being blended and returned to a combination of oloroso and Pedro Ximenez butts. We are proud to present to you this resulting Highland peaty potion. Leather and dried fruits roared from the glass, tangled with dried figs, dates and smoked ginger beer, while chewy toffees, marzipan and gingerbread rode the gusts like embers from a storm-beaten orchard fire. Lightning bolts of chipotle and black pepper flashed over a tsunami of lapsang souchong and miso, as caramel swirled through haunting smoke. On the palate, dark and stormy ginger-laced coal smoke and rich sherry collided with barbecue-scorched bramley apple sausages and maple pancakes. A splash of water unleashed medicinal waves against dandelion and burdock rocks, sending oak-smoked marzipan, dark chocolate and toffee apples crashing over a bonfire to leave a lingering cloud of charred fruit and ash.
