We sat down to enjoy a ploughman’s lunch – crumbly, mature cloth-bound cheddar, strong pickles and pumpernickel bread spread with salted butter. The palate neat was like a horseradish roast beef roll-up with cream cheese and Dijon-style mustard which made it a zesty appetizer. After the addition of water, the sweet aroma of treacle tart, flapjacks and salted caramel appeared, while on the taste like a Radi served at the Oktoberfest in Munich; a spiral-cut white radish sprinkled with salt and chives, the perfect accompaniment to a pretzel and beer. After eleven years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, we transferred this whisky into a refill heavy toast medium char hogshead.
