Product Description
“The name is a bit of a clue as to the peating levels, and explains how this unique old Islay whisky is properly punching above its peat levels. Old Islay whisky is something a bit special, and increasingly rare. Younger peated whiskies are often rambunctious and room-filling in peat or smoke, but as they spend decades longer in a cask, they pick up this lovely old-worldly charm of distant smoke, brown sugar, and a rich nuttiness. This cask is no exception, except that it's managed to cling onto its punchy youth while giving that old Islay whisky character. This whisky is very clearly from the powerhouse distillery 29, but with an old world charm to the spirit that's rarely seen elsewhere. After 23 years entirely in a refill Oloroso butt, this is gorgeously sweet, seductive, and offers peat in parts per thousand.” - Matt Bailey, European Managing Director
Tasting Notes
This one displayed all the usual refinements this distillery is famed for: peat smoke tinged with dried exotic fruits and encroaching waves of iodine, antiseptic, kippers and peppered mackerel for starters. Then, going deeper, we found it gathered complexity with suggestions of smoked olive oil, tarred rope, creel nets and wet beach kelp. Gorgeous!
