We were instantly moved to the Cais da Ribeira in Porto on a warm, dusky night overlooking the Douro River to Vila Nova de Gaia with all the Port lodges lined up. We sat in one of the many bars and ordered a P&T (white) Port and tonic, served chilled in a tall glass with a slice of lemon and a sprig of fresh mint. After a little water we ordered a mixed salad with roasted bell peppers, tomatoes, fresh cucumber and cilantro tossed in red wine vinaigrette. We ended the evening with an affogato, a scoop of vanilla ice-cream topped with a shot of hot espresso and, what else, a young vintage Port.
