Tasting Notes
The initial thought was of a strong herbal cough syrup; no wonder it was sold during prohibition in the United States as medicine! We also sniffed antiseptic, glue and penetrating oil. On the palate it was definitely not for the fainthearted, as we found ourselves in Franconia, Bavaria, well known for its heavily smoked blood sausages and a famous rauchbier from Bamberg. With water we were transported on to a pier on a foggy day, having fritto misto di mare with plenty of teriyaki seasoning followed by an intensely herbal and smoky fernet liqueur as a digestif. Following 21 years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, we transferred this whisky into a first fill Spanish oak oloroso hogshead.
