The air was full of seaside character as shells and sand crushed together beneath our feet. We set out our picnic blanket and unpacked fish pate, horseradish sauce and sourdough bread to be dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We had a few fresh oysters and French onion soup, plus sweet treats including sour apple pie, made with a digestive biscuit and roasted chestnut base. After a dash of water we found ourselves among the seaweed and salty rockpools. On a beach bonfire salmon was sizzling in the midst of the smoke and a strong whiff of liquorice, when combined with the coastal iodine, reminded us of sweet medicine.
