Cask Intro
EU activations manager, Andrew Park’s whisky pick for this month is Cask No. 73.172: Wax on toast
“This is a classic Speyside spirit that is a key component of a well-known blend beginning with the letter ‘D’. This whisky showcases the delicate elegance of this spirit and the harmony of its first fill ex-bourbon cask maturation. As winter draws in, I highly recommend trying this in a warming hot toddy. Find the largest mug you have and fill it with slices of orange, lemon and fresh ginger, a 1cm piece of fresh turmeric root, a generous dollop of honey and a sprig of rosemary. Allow it to infuse for a few minutes and then stir in a good measure of Cask No. 73.172. The herbaceous and waxy notes of this dram will really shine through.”
Tasting Notes
The neat nose suggested to us a richer and drier profile, with waxes, fabrics, chalky notes and impressions of linen, sunflower and pumpkinseed oils, and toasted bread. Some water brought out pine cones, cedar wood, crushed nettles and petrichor vibes. When neat, the palate was initially herbal and nicely mentholated, its gentle oily texture balanced by fruity flapjack notes, heather flowers and sultana. Water brought malt extract, clove spice and biscuity richness, plus a little peppery warmth and touches of sandalwood and mineral oils.
